Hear the latest about Audacity's update, an important security update for PowerPress, the “podcasting patent” from Personal Audio, SpeakPipe's new paid plans, New Media Expo, and more in this “eleventy-first” podcast episode.

Audacity updates to 2.0.3

This latest update to Audacity brings mostly some bug fixes, but a couple handy new effects:

  • Studio Fade Out (uses a filtered “S” curve).
  • Adjustable Fade (accessible effect for creating partial fades and adjustable fade shapes).
  • Bass and Treble (replaces Bass Boost).

Read the full release notes for Audacity 2.0.3 to see what's new, and download the latest version yourself!

Updating? It's okay to install or update Audacity 2.0.3 over previous versions. But on OS X (and possibly Linux), backup your “plug-ins” folder first or else you will lose any plugins you added. After you finish the copy, put your chosen plugins back in the “plug-ins” folder.

Urgent security issue with 1-Pixel Out and PowerPress

Due to concerns of possible security exploits, the 1 Pixel Out Audio Player has been removed from PowerPress as of version 4.0.6. PowerPress users are strongly encouraged to update their copy of PowerPress immediately.

Learn more about PowerPress 4.0.6 from Blubrry's blog post.

Personal Audio is suing podcasters

Personal Audio was award a patent that describes podcasting. This could be terrible news for podcasters and companies that assist podcasting! Check out the following links to learn more.

SpeakPipe is coming out of beta with free and paid plans

The audio feedback system for websites, SpeakPipe, is coming out of beta on March 1 and switching to free and paid plans.

I support this decision and I think they're still offering a lot for free! But I'll probably becoming a paying customer.

If you don't like a monthly contract, consider the nonexpiring prepaid plans.

New Media Expo thoughts

New Media Expo (NMX) and the Podcast Awards were fantastic! The sessions were hit and miss with some major surprises.

You can still buy a virtual ticket to have access to all the sessions from New Media Expo, including the great keynotes from Leo Laporte and Ford!

Also check out Dave Jackson's (passionately honest) thoughts on New Media Expo.

Audacity training workshop

I'm going to offer my first online training workshop for anyone to learn how to use Audacity. The workshop will probably be noon (EST/GMT-5) on Saturday, March 2.

This will be an information-packed hour with time for questions after. All registrants will receive a downloadable copy after the workshop.

Through February 9 15, you can reserve your seat for $100. Email Feedback@TheAudacitytoPodcast.com with the subject “Audacity training workshop” to reserve your spot before they're all taken!

In this release, the most thing I’d like is: Audacity has not created a folder named “clean” when I open an audio file an apply my change. For me, it’s very useful because I can’t remember what audio file I open it, and I don’t like those empty folder exists on my pc. haha.
Thanks for sharing.

Daniel, the PA “podcasting” patent (US 8,112,504) was originally filed in 1996, not 2009. In 2009, an application for it to be time-extended was made; said extension was granted in 2012.

Also, although it may not be “right”, US and UK patent law does allow the filer not to excercise their invention; however both those jurisdictions also *require* the holder to licence the invention *on a non-discriminatory* basis, to others, although the law does not preclude extortionate fees being involved – as long as those fees do not discriminate on certain attributes (race, gender, political orientation, field of commerce, and so on). Under the laws, the fees can be pro-rata based on sales or manufacturing volume, profit, number of users, period of time (eg: for 13 months, for 5 years, for 1 decade, for 25 years, whatever) and other “fair game” non-discrimanatory bases. Some my feel that those laws are inappropriate, inefficient, too expensive for society or unfair in some way, but those are entirely other questions.

Personally, I feel that PA behaviour is monstrous, but experienced enough to know that such does not, in and of itself, change the legal position, sadly.

Also, you seem to be confusing copyright and patent law: patent law covers *use* of the invention, not in particular the manufacture of the invention. That is exactly why PA are suing the podcasters (users of the invention), not the creators of podcasting (hardware or software) equipment.
