15 years of Audacity: interview with creator Roger Dannenberg

May 28, 2015 is Audacity's 15th birthday! Celebrate with me as I speak with Audacity founder and creator, Professor Roger Dannenberg.

About Prof. Roger Dannenberg

Roger Dannenberg is a professor of Computer Science, Art, and Music at Carnegie Mellon University. He holds several patents, has published numerous articles and chapters in respected technical and music journals, and is a musician himself. Prof. Dannenberg is also the senior cofounder and developer for Audacity.

The story of Audacity

It surprised me to learn that Audacity was originally created as an audio-visualization software, not as an audio editor. But it very quickly became a great tool for editing all kinds of audio.

In the years since Audacity 0.8's launch, Audacity has had a grand total of over 88 million downloads. Version 2.1.0, alone, has had nearly 1 million downloads at this time.

Audacity is used by voiceover artists, scientists, students, kids, multimedia producers, podcasters, audiobook narrators, musicians, and much more.

Listen to the interview to hear the full story of Audacity's creation, inspiration, and development.

Huge thanks to the whole Audacity team for their tremendous contributions: documenting, developing, testing, translating, and much more!

If you appreciate this powerful tool and everyone's generous contributions, please donate to support Audacity's continued development.

What's your favorite Audacity feature? And what new feature, serious or silly, would you want from Audacity if you could have anything?

Thank you for the podcast reviews!

  • Paul David Peterson said, “Today my podcast went live on iTunes, and there’s no way I could have done it without Daniel’s podcast (and all he shares with the podcasting community). …” Read the full review.
  • bytespider, from the UK, said, “I've been listening to TAP ever since deciding to start my own podcast; BedtimeFM's Story Time, and it has helped my in so many ways. Not least of all improving my microphone technique and producing well produced content. I still have a lot to learn, and with the help of TAP I'm improving each day.”
  • grishrak said, “… this podcast is less about tech and how to with mixer x and more about giving us incite [sic] and tips on how to podcast and what to avoid once we hit record. That alone has saved me many hours of editing in post … as well as helps me know directly where to go if I keep running into an issue.” Read the full review.
